We have already demonstrated the greenfield deployment of Exchange 2013 in our screencast How to Install Exchange 2013.
In this screencast, we perform Exchange 2013 initial configuration. We start with non-critical tasks, like getting rid of the certificate warning in Exchange Admin Center and creating an Exchange toolbar. Then, we move on to configuring Exchange Database name and relocating DB and LOG files.
It is quite common to use different internal and public domains, so we go through the process of adding Accepted Domains and configuring E-mail Address Policies.
By default Exchange 2013 setup does not create Internet Send connectors and you need to create manually one. There are two options – sending outbound emails directly or through a smart host, and we demonstrate both of them.
Every organization that sends and receives e-mails should have a valid postmaster address (according to RFC 5321). The external postmaster address is used as the sender for system-generated messages and notifications sent to external senders. By default in Exchange 2013, this address is postmaster@<Default accepted domain>. If your internal and public domains are different, you will have to configure manually the External Postmaster address the way it is demonstrated in Step 2.
One of the important tasks in Exchange 2013 initial configuration is creating mailboxes for existing users. Exchange Admin Center does not provide an option to bulk create mailboxes for existing users in Active Directory. We demonstrate an easy way to automate this task in Exchange Management Shell.
